Asheville's Oldest Run is Full of History
The 43rd Annual Thomas Wolfe 8K
Originally started by the Asheville Track Club in 1976, the Thomas Wolfe 8k has seen different dates, distances, and race directors.
Once upon a time, there was a whole festival celebrating the life and work of Asheville's favorite son, Thomas Wolfe. The event took place over the first weekend in October to coincide with his birthday, Oct. 3rd. The festival has gone away and the race has been moved to the end of the month to make it optimal leaf peeping time.
The distance had been a 10k at one point but changed to an 8k along the way. There have been many volunteer race directors but due to the logistics and to promote the growth the race is now managed by Kick It Event Management but it still benefits the Asheville Track Club, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial as well as our volunteer sponsor - Read to Succeed.
The race starts at the Old Homestead which was originally a boarding house managed by Thomas Wolfe's mother. Runners will start from the front of the house and travel through downtown to the historic Montford neighborhood mentioned in Wolfe's writings. This is the ONLY race in Asheville to run through the Riverside Cemetary. Participants can take a quick moment to recognize this American treasure as you pass by his final resting place.
